Homes England submits application for new landscape-led housing scheme at former Chattenden Barracks site 

Overview

Homes England, the government’s housing and regeneration agency, has submitted an outline planning application for a landscape-led residential development which seeks to bring back into use the former Chattenden Barracks site and deliver much needed new homes, greenspace and community facilities for the Chattenden area. 

The submission of the Outline Planning Application (OPA) follows engagement over the past year, enabling local residents, elected representatives and other stakeholders to view, comment on and shape the submitted proposals.   

If approved, the proposals could deliver up to 450 homes, alongside new and enhanced green space and the provision of improved local facilities for both existing and future residents and provide an opportunity to deliver locally targeted social value. 

Our plans have been informed by extensive engagement with the local community and other key stakeholders to ensure that matters raised have been fully considered including those relating to the protection of the Chattenden Woods and Lodge Hill SSSI and measures being proposed to support the nationally important Nightingale population.  

Following Medway Council’s validation of the submitted application there will be an opportunity to comment on the proposals as part of statutory consultation. A link to the planning application will be added to this ‘Latest News’ page once Medway Council has validated the application.

This report details the engagement activities which took place last year as part of our work to develop proposals for the Barracks site, and explains how we took stakeholder feedback into account while we refined our plans. 

Separately to the Chattenden Barracks Planning Application, Homes England are soon to be submitting a planning application to Medway Council which relates to proposed restorative work at the Scheduled Monument located to the north of Chattenden as part of the Whose Hoo initiative. The works proposed seek to contribute to Homes England’s ongoing commitment to the historic estate at Lodge Hill.
